The Welcome Center and Girl Program are the first two (of four) buildings to begin construction at the Welcome Center complex at Camp Whispering Cedars STEM Center of Excellence. The Welcome Center complex is the first phase of a master plan designed by SHM that addresses the recent property acquisition by the GSNETX of over forty acres and the presence of the escarpment zone within the camp. The Welcome Center building, with its vaulted common room, greets both VIP guests, campers, and chaperones as they arrive at Camp Whispering Cedars. It also provides office and meeting spaces for the camp staff and Girl Scout personnel when needed.
The Girl Program Center is the first STEM-oriented building designed for Camp Cedars. It is a large, flexible space designed to hold a large group for various activities, or can be sub-divided into three distinct areas for a more intimate classroom setting. The building has two separate teaching stations and abundant storage for the many project bins used by the Girl Scouts for STEM learning. The large openings of glass from the front to the back of the building help tie the indoors visually to the outdoor nature of the camp, and the rear loggias allow for instant access to the camp. The separate indoor and outdoor restroom facilities allow the building to be used by campers at all times, even if the classrooms are locked and not in use.
The Boone Foundation Courtyard ties all of the Welcome Center’s buildings together with a nurturing space that honors three trailblazing women who stood up, spoke out, and devoted their lives to creating sustainable institutions to promote gender equality for a just world.
